Window Installation Stopped Working

A window that used to open, close, or lock without a fight – and now doesn’t – almost always means one of four things: a failed or binding balance system, a warped or settling frame, a broken hardware component, or an installation that was never quite true to begin with. In most cases, the window itself is still sound. What’s failed is a mechanical part, a seal, or the geometry of the opening.

Call (888) 635-0804

That’s the short answer. Here’s the longer one: windows are not supposed to be a struggle. When a sash won’t lift, a crank won’t turn, a lock won’t seat, or a slider drags like it’s moving through sand, something has given out. It could be a five-dollar part. It could be a frame that’s racked with the house. Either way, using force to push through it tends to turn a fixable problem into a replacement job. So the first thing to do is stop fighting it and figure out what you’re actually dealing with.

Why It Happens

Worn or Broken Balance System

Double-hung windows use a balance system – either a coiled spring or a spiral rod inside the jamb – to hold the sash at any height and make it easy to raise or lower. When the balance wears out or breaks, the sash either free-falls the moment you let go, fights you going up, or won’t stay open at all. You can usually tell this is the culprit because the window moves unevenly side to side, or one corner drops faster than the other. Balance systems are under significant spring tension. Do not attempt to remove the sash or the jamb liner yourself – a released balance spring can cause serious injury. This is a job for a trained technician.

Frame Warp or House Settling

Houses move. Over years, foundations shift, wood expands and contracts, and the rough opening that was perfectly square in 1998 is a parallelogram today. When the frame is no longer plumb and square, the sash binds against it – you’ll notice the window is harder to open in summer than winter, sticks more on one side, or leaves an uneven gap at the top or bottom. A paint bead that bridges the sash to the frame is a quick tell: if someone painted the window shut, that’s a separate and simpler problem, though the underlying cause may still be a shifted frame.

Failed Hardware: Operators, Locks, and Hinges

Casement and awning windows use a crank-driven operator to push the sash open. These operators have gears that strip over time, especially if the window was ever cranked with ice or debris in the track. If you hear grinding, feel the handle spin without resistance, or the sash moves only partway and stops, the operator is the likely failure point. Locks and hinge arms break too – usually after years of the window being opened and closed with the lock still partially engaged, which bends the hardware gradually until it stops seating entirely.

Original Installation That Was Never True

This one takes longer to show up, but when it does, it explains everything. A window installed out of plumb or without proper shimming settles into the rough opening at the wrong angle. Early on it feels stiff but functional. After a few years of seasonal movement, the frame has racked enough that nothing seats, nothing locks cleanly, and the weatherstripping compresses unevenly. If you look at the gap between the sash and the frame and it’s wider at one corner than the opposite, and the window has never been right since it was installed, this is worth telling the technician when they arrive.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop forcing it. If the window won’t open or close without significant pressure, stop. Forcing a binding sash stresses the frame, cracks glass, and strips hardware. One good shove can turn a repair into a full replacement.
  • Take a few photos. Photograph the gap between the sash and the frame at all four corners, any visible cracks in the frame or sash corners, and any hardware that looks bent, stripped, or out of position. This gives your technician a head start before they even open their toolbox.
  • Note when it happens. Does it bind only in humid weather? Only in the morning? Only on the top sash? Pattern matters. A window that sticks only in July is telling a different story than one that’s been frozen shut since October.
  • Do not attempt to remove sash balance springs or jamb liners yourself. These components are under spring tension and can release suddenly. If you can see a broken spiral rod or a coiled spring, leave it in place and let the technician handle the disassembly safely.
  • If the window is your only egress in a bedroom or a room with no other exit, treat it as a priority call. A non-operable egress window is a safety issue. Call (888) 635-0804 and let the team know – a live person answers around the clock, every day.

How We Fix It

When your local TruePane Windows & Doors technician arrives, the first thing they do is measure the opening – not guess at it. They’ll check the frame for plumb and square, inspect the balance system or operator hardware, and identify whether the failure is mechanical, structural, or both.

If it’s a hardware issue – a broken balance, a stripped operator, a bent hinge arm – the repair usually wraps in a single visit. We carry a working inventory of components for the manufacturer lines we install, including Andersen, Pella, Marvin, and Milgard, so we’re not ordering parts and coming back in two weeks.

If the frame has racked or the original installation was never quite right, the conversation shifts toward whether a full Window Replacement makes more sense than a repair. We’ll be straight with you about that – and the decision is yours, made with a written line-item estimate in your hand before any work starts.

Every job is covered by our Done Right Promise and The Keystone Standard: both warranty layers registered in writing before the truck leaves the driveway. No surprises on the bill. No paperwork fights afterward.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★ 4.9 from 7+ reviews

"Eleven windows replaced in two days. The crew chief, Marcus, showed me the level on every single frame before they caulked it. My wife noticed the street noise was gone before I did."

- Ronald P.

"A casement crank had stripped and the sash was swollen shut. The technician, Ray, fixed the crank on the spot and only then talked about replacement for the three windows that were genuinely done. That is why the whole street uses them now."

- Eleanor G.

"French doors to the patio, custom size because this house was built in 1961 and nothing is standard. Measured twice, three weeks to fabricate like they warned, and the install day they laid runners over my floors without being asked."

- Marie S.
