ViewLux Window Replacement: The Columbus Owner’s Guide

If you have a ViewLux window with a failed seal, a cracked sash, or hardware that no longer locks, we stock and install ViewLux-compatible replacement windows throughout Columbus and central Ohio. A typical ViewLux replacement in Columbus runs $450 to $1,200 per window installed, depending on size, glass package, and frame condition, and most single-unit swaps are done in one visit. The way owners usually discover the part has failed is simple: the window fogs between the panes and won’t clear, or the sash suddenly takes two hands to lift in July.

ViewLux made a lot of vinyl and aluminum windows for Ohio builders in the 1990s and early 2000s, and we see them regularly in Clintonville, Westerville, Gahanna, and the older subdivisions around Morse Road and Bethel Road. The frames often still have life in them. The seals and balances usually don’t. That’s the part worth understanding before you spend a nickel.

TruePane Windows & Doors is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with ViewLux, and we don’t pretend to be. We work on their windows because Columbus is full of them, and because the parts are still matchable when you know what to look for.

Which ViewLux Models This Applies To

ViewLux built several series over the years, and the replacement path differs depending on which one you have. The most common lines we see in Columbus are the ViewLux 2000 series, the Builder’s Grade vinyl line (often labeled VX on the spacer bar), and the aluminum thermal-break series that went into a lot of 1980s and early 1990s condominium buildings near downtown and along High Street.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: ViewLux changed its balance shoe design between the early and late production runs. A window that looks identical from the outside may take a 15/32-inch coil balance rather than the older 9/16-inch, and forcing the wrong one in is how sashes end up cracked at the corner. We measure every opening twice, pull the sash, and check the spacer bar stamp before quoting a part. That’s the difference between a replacement that runs true and one that fights the frame for the next fifteen years.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for glass packs and sealed units, we use an Ohio supplier that fabricates to the same thickness and low-E spec as the original ViewLux glass. For balances, locks, and tilt latches, the original ViewLux hardware was made well, and where a genuine part is still available we prefer it. Where it isn’t, we carry aftermarket equivalents that hold up as well or better. We’ll say which is which on the quote and tell you why.

Signs Your ViewLux Window Replacement Is Failing

  • Fog or condensation between the panes. The seal on the insulated glass unit has failed. In Columbus, the swing from humid August air to single-digit January nights flexes the seal until it cracks, and once argon escapes, the window can’t be cleaned back to clear. This is a glass-pack replacement, not a full window teardown.
  • The sash drops when you let go, or takes real effort to lift. The balance system has worn out. On ViewLux windows, the coil springs inside the side tracks fatigue after fifteen to twenty years of daily use. A tired balance makes a window dangerous to leave open, especially on a second floor.
  • The lock no longer catches, or you can push the sash open from outside with the lock engaged. This is usually a worn keeper or a sash that has settled out of square. It’s also a security issue. We treat a window that won’t lock as a priority repair, not a cosmetic one.
  • You can hear street noise, or feel a draft with the sash fully closed. The weatherstripping has compressed and the sash isn’t seating against the frame. In older ViewLux aluminum frames, the wool pile strips are often the first thing to go. Cold air follows.
  • Cracks in the vinyl at the sash corners or along the meeting rail. That’s typically stress from a failed balance or from a sash that was forced at some point. A cracked sash will only get worse, and it’s the one failure that usually justifies replacing the entire sash rather than a component.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard ViewLux double-hung replacement in Columbus, you’re looking at $450 to $900 per window for a glass pack swap with new weatherstripping and a balance tune-up. A full sash replacement with new balances, locks, and re-glazing runs $700 to $1,200 per window. Custom sizing, second-story access, or a frame that needs re-squaring will push toward the top of that range.

Here’s what that price includes, always in writing: the part, the labor, the haul-away of the old sash, and a Done Right Promise on the workmanship. Both manufacturer warranty layers get registered in writing before the truck leaves the driveway, with durations stated. No surprise line items on the bill. Dale Kessler keeps a rule on the shop whiteboard that names the company: if the pane is not true, the job is not done.

We carry the most common ViewLux glass packs, balances, and latch sets on the truck, so most Columbus replacements happen in a single visit. Seniors and veterans get 5% off, permanently, and any repair over $250 qualifies for $50 off.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can safely clean the tracks, check for loose screws on the keeper, and note whether the fog is between the panes or just on the room-side surface. Those observations help us quote accurately over the phone.

What we’d ask you not to do is pull a ViewLux sash on your own. The coil balances are under tension, and without the right release tool, that tension lets go fast. We’ve repaired enough self-removals over the years to say plainly: fingers and high-tension balances don’t mix. Let a trained glazier do the removal. Call (888) 635-0804 and we’ll send a background-checked, uniformed technician, not a subcontractor we met last week. The estimate is free, and a real person answers the phone when you call.
