CGI Window Replacement: The Columbus Owner’s Guide

CGI window replacement in Columbus typically runs $450-$1,200 per window installed, depending on the series and whether the frame needs rebuilding. If you’re reading this, odds are you walked past a window this morning and felt a draft, or noticed condensation between the panes that won’t wipe away, or found the sash binding when you tried to open it. Those are the moments CGI owners call us. We keep CGI-compatible sashes, insulated glass units, balances, and hardware on the truck, and most single-window replacements go in same day once we’ve measured the opening and matched the part to your model.

TruePane Windows & Doors is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with CGI. We are, however, authorized to install their product lines, and we’ve been doing exactly that for Columbus homeowners for long enough to know which parts fail first and which replacements actually hold up in central Ohio weather.

Which CGI Models This Applies To

CGI builds impact-rated windows and doors primarily for coastal markets, but plenty of them made their way inland to Columbus through custom home builds and high-end remodels. The lines we see most often are the Estate Collection, the Sentinel series, and the Targa by CGI, which is their aluminum thermally broken line.

Here’s the part most people don’t know until they’re standing in front of the window with a tape measure: CGI identification isn’t on a sticker you can peel off. It’s etched into the corner of the glass, usually a small code that starts with the series name. If the etching has worn off or you can’t read it, the frame dimensions and the glass thickness get us most of the way there. CGI windows carry laminated glass, and the thickness tells us a lot. Most Estate Collection units run 7/16″ or 9/16″ laminated glass, while Targa runs a beefier 1″ insulated laminated unit. Getting the glass thickness wrong on a CGI window means the new sash won’t seat in the frame grooves properly, and you’ll feel that mistake every time the wind blows.

On OEM versus aftermarket: for the glass itself, we’ll always recommend OEM CGI laminated glass. Aftermarket laminated glass can match the rating, but the interlayer chemistry and edge seal have to be exact or you lose the impact rating the window was built for. For hardware and balances, quality aftermarket equivalents from Baldwin and Truth often outperform the original parts at a better price, and we’ll show you both on paper before we put a single screw in.

Signs Your CGI Window Replacement Is Failing

  • Fogging or haze between the glass panes. The desiccant in the spacer has saturated and the seal has failed. Once that happens, the insulating gas has escaped and the window’s thermal performance is gone. This is the most common CGI failure we see in Columbus, especially on windows that take direct afternoon sun.
  • A sash that sticks, binds, or won’t stay open. The balance system is wearing out. CGI windows are heavy because of the laminated glass, and when a balance goes, you’ll fight that weight every time you open the window. A worn balance can also let a sash slam shut, which is dangerous on a window that heavy.
  • Water staining on the interior sill or wall below the window. That’s the weep system clogged or the weatherstripping compressed past the point of sealing. Water that sits in the track corrodes the hardware fast on aluminum frames like Targa.
  • Visible rust or pitting on the frame or hinges. Aluminum doesn’t rust, but the fasteners and hardware do. If you see rust streaks running from a screw or hinge, the galvanic reaction has started, and the only fix is replacing the hardware before the frame itself gets compromised.
  • Cracks in the glass itself. Laminated glass can crack and still stay in the frame because of the interlayer. That’s the impact rating working. But a cracked unit has lost its structural integrity and needs replacement before the next storm, not after.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

CGI window replacement in Columbus breaks down like this. A single insulated glass unit replacement runs $450-$700 installed, depending on glass size and whether it’s a standard laminated unit or a thicker Targa unit. A full sash replacement runs $600-$900 when the frame is still square and the hardware is reusable. A complete window replacement, frame and all, runs $900-$1,200 installed, and that’s when the frame has rot, warp, or structural damage.

Every quote comes as a written line-item estimate. You’ll see the part cost, the labor cost, and the warranty terms before we start. No change orders, no “we found something else” surprises. Every replacement carries The Keystone Standard: both manufacturer warranty layers registered in writing, with durations stated, before our truck leaves your driveway. And our Done Right Promise covers the workmanship. If it’s not done right, we make it right. No paperwork fights, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

If you’re comfortable with a screwdriver and a level, there are things you can safely check. You can inspect the weep holes at the bottom of the frame and clear them with a soft brush. You can check the weatherstripping for compression and take photos of the etching codes and frame dimensions. Those details help us quote accurately over the phone.

But replacing CGI glass or sashes is not a homeowner job. These units are heavy, sometimes 80 pounds or more for a large Targa sash. The laminated glass is under tension in the frame, and if a balance is worn, the sash can drop fast and do serious damage to a hand or a wall. The frame has to be shimmed and squared properly, or the new unit won’t seat and you’ll end up with the exact same failure in two years. Dale Kessler grew up in Clintonville watching his father do glass work on older homes, and the rule he learned then is the one we still work by: a window that fits right shouldn’t need caulk to do the work the frame was supposed to do. If you’re reaching for a caulk gun to fix a CGI window, call (888) 635-0804 instead.
