Window Replacement Stopped Working

A window that won’t open, won’t close, or won’t stay put isn’t just an inconvenience – it’s usually a sign that a component has worn out, shifted, or failed, and in most cases it can be diagnosed and resolved in a single visit. The cause is almost always one of four things: failed balance hardware, a warped or swollen frame, a broken operator mechanism, or a sash that has come off its track. Once a technician identifies which one, the fix is straightforward.

Windows stop working the way they should for the same reason any precision-fit part eventually gives out: time, use, and the slow work of seasonal movement. Frames expand in heat, contract in cold, and do it thousands of times over the years. Hardware wears down. Seals get old. A window that opened smoothly in year one can bind, drag, or lock solid by year ten – and when it does, the instinct is to force it. That’s usually when a fixable problem becomes a bigger one. Stop forcing it, find out what’s actually wrong, and fix it right.

Why It Happens

Worn or Broken Balance Hardware

The balance system – the springs or spiral rods hidden inside a double-hung window’s frame channels – is what lets the sash travel up and down smoothly and hold its position when you let go. When a balance wears out or snaps, the sash either falls on its own, fights you going up, or won’t budge at all. You can usually tell this is the cause if the window moves freely when you lift it with both hands but won’t stay open without being propped, or if you hear a sudden snap and one side of the sash drops.

Frame or Sash Warped by Moisture or Settlement

Wood frames absorb moisture over seasons. Even vinyl and composite frames can be pushed out of square if the surrounding structure settles or if the original install was slightly off-plumb. When the frame distorts, the sash binds against it – not because anything is broken exactly, but because two surfaces that used to align no longer do. The tell-tale sign is a window that opens fine in winter but drags or refuses to close completely in humid summer months, or one where the gap around the sash is visibly uneven when the window is shut.

Failed Operator or Crank Mechanism (Casements and Awnings)

Casement and awning windows open by way of a crank-driven operator – a small gearbox that translates your handle turn into the outward swing of the sash. The plastic gears inside those operators have a finite lifespan, and when they strip, the handle spins free without moving the window. You may also hear grinding, feel sudden resistance, or find that the sash has swung open further than it should and won’t come back. The arm that connects the operator to the sash can also bend or detach, which has the same effect.

Sash Off Track or Locking Hardware Seized

Sliding windows and sliding doors run in a track, and debris, bent rollers, or a warped track will stop them cold. Lift the panel slightly while pushing – if it breaks free and slides, the track or roller is the likely culprit. On any window type, a locking mechanism that is bent, corroded, or simply old can bind the sash even when the rest of the hardware is fine. Check whether the lock is fully disengaged before assuming something structural is wrong; it’s a common source of confusion and an easy place to start.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop forcing it. Repeated pressure against a bound sash cracks glazing, bends hardware, and can split a frame. If it won’t move without real effort, leave it where it is until someone has a look.
  • Photograph the window from inside and outside. Get a picture of the sash position, any visible gaps, and the hardware. If there’s a crack, a separated corner, or a broken part you can see, photograph that too. It gives a technician a head start and protects you if anything changes before the visit.
  • Check whether the lock is fully open. Try turning, flipping, or sliding every lock point on the sash before assuming a deeper problem. A partially engaged lock feels exactly like a stuck frame.
  • If the window is stuck open and weather is coming, cover it temporarily. A piece of heavy plastic sheeting taped inside the frame keeps rain out without putting stress on a damaged sash. Don’t try to force the sash closed if it won’t move – you risk cracking the glass.
  • Do not attempt to replace broken balance springs or restring a spring-loaded cable yourself. These components are under significant tension. A spring that releases unexpectedly can cause a serious hand or eye injury. Note what you see and let a trained technician handle it – that’s not overcaution, that’s how people who work on these things for a living think about it.

How We Fix It

When your local TruePane Windows & Doors team arrives, the first thing a technician does is a full operational inspection – sash travel, balance condition, operator function, track and roller wear, frame plumb, and lock engagement – before touching a tool. That takes about fifteen minutes and gives a clear picture of exactly what has failed.

From there, most repairs fall under our Window Replacement service: a worn balance gets replaced with the correct rated unit for that sash weight, a stripped operator is swapped out for a matching part, a roller gets pulled and replaced. If the inspection shows the frame itself is compromised – warped beyond correction, soft from moisture damage, or so far out of plumb that hardware replacements won’t hold – we’ll tell you plainly and walk through what a full window replacement involves.

Either way, you get a written estimate before anything starts. No dollar figure changes once work begins. Most operational repairs are completed in a single visit, and every job is covered by our Done Right Promise and The Keystone Standard: both warranty layers registered in writing before the truck leaves your driveway. If it’s not right, we come back – no paperwork, no arguing.
